The goal of the proposal is to create a working thesis statement and basic research plan that considers context, audience, purpose, and presents potential sources. A proposal is not an outline, as it does not structure the paper. Rather, a proposal offers direction for research needs and gives your professor an opportunity to provide feedback before the drafting process.

Review the Toulmin-model outline (Week 2 Lesson) and your completed Week 1 Assignment (Pro-Position Proposal). Assess any feedback provided by the professor and/or your peers.
Compose a position paper representing the pro side of your topic. (See the Pro-Paper Template). The paper should include approximately 6 developed paragraphs:
Introduction (with thesis statement)
Context paragraph
3 body paragraphs (focusing on 3 pros)
Conclusion
Apply a formal tone appropriate for academic audiences, maintaining an objective 3rd person point of view – no 1st person (I, me, my, we, our, us, mine) or 2nd person (you, your). Avoid contractions, clichés, and slang terminology.
Use the provided template to assist in formatting the title page and headers.
Incorporate at least 3 scholarly sources into the paper. Cite all sources in APA format, both parenthetically and on a reference page.
Before submission, proofread and edit carefully for spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Not every error will be flagged automatically in word-processing programs, and some that are flagged as errors are actually correct.

Note: The article was pulled from our Chamberlain library’s Points of View Reference Center database. This resource is highly recommended, as it presents many of the topics in the General Education Healthcare field that may be applicable this term. To access the resource from our library website, choose “Databases” on the homepage, and scroll down to “Points of View.” Click “Go.” Scroll down to Health and Medicine. You will see a large list of potential topics ranging from Allergies in Schools to Vegetarianism. When you click on a topic (Vaccines, for example), you will see an overview of the topic, as well as points, counterpoints, and a guide to critical analysis.

The course Tutoring link offers a variety of services, ranging from live connections with tutors, to practice quizzes, and best of all – a paper review service. This week, you will complete the final draft of your Pro-Con Position Paper. Review the template provided and consider the feedback from your instructor and peers as you make edits and finalize your work.
The final draft should apply the following:
An APA formatted title page
An attention grabbing introduction to draw in the audience
A well-written thesis that acknowledges both pro and con topics
A formal tone, avoiding both 1st (I, me, my, we, our, us, mine) and 2nd (you, your) person point of view – no slang or contractions
Either the alternating or divided pattern of organization, presenting both counterarguments and rebuttals
Body paragraphs that include topic sentences, evidence, and concluding/connecting sentences
Five incorporated scholarly sources that support all assertions
A conclusion that resolves the argument and applies a thought-provoking concluding technique
In-text and reference page citations in APA format
