Topic: Effect of COVID-19 on China

5 questions:

1. What is China’s attitude towards the pandemic?
2. How many Chinese work from home now?
3. Why is the current rate of infection very low in China?
4. What are China’s policies on epidemic prevention and control at different stages?
5. Can other countries copy China’s epidemic control policies?

FIRST DRAFT for Thesis:
– Since the outbreak of COVID-19 in Wuhan, China, in late 2019, the epidemic

has rapidly spread across the globe. Yet China, with a high population density,
now has one of the lowest infection rates. In addition, China’s economy is
gradually recovering, which has a lot to do with the Chinese government’s
approach to COVID-19. China’s epidemic prevention policies may be efficient,
but they are hard to follow, especially in the West, where human rights seem
to be at stake. This research is going to discuss the current situation of the
epidemic in China, the attitude of the Chinese government to deal with
COVID-19, and the feasibility of western countries to follow suit.

Zhong, Bao-Liang, et al. “Knowledge, attitudes, and practices towards COVID-19 among Chinese residents during the rapid rise period of the COVID-19 outbreak: a quick online cross-sectional survey.” International journal of biological sciences 16.10 (2020): 1745.

The attitude of the Chinese people about coronavirus was a positive one, “most Chinese residents of a relatively high socioeconomic status, in particular women, are knowledgeable about COVID-19, hold optimistic attitudes and have appropriate practices towards COVID-19.” (Zhong, 1740). The article talks of Chinese women being knowledgeable about coronavirus pandemic, holding a positive and optimistic attitude since there are health education programs that are aimed at improving the knowledge on COVID-19.

The article also noted that the Chinese public exhibited a good level of COVID-19, which shows that they have a positive attitude, believing that the pandemic is manageable as they have adhered to good health practices as provided by the world health organization. The article also notes that the COVID-19 related knowledge, attitudes and practices are mainly affected by age, marital status and the level of education.

Zhang, M., et al. “Knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding COVID-19 among healthcare workers in Henan, China.” Journal of Hospital Infection 105.2 (2020): 183-187.

In the article written by Zhang (183) above, the author indicates that according to their analysis on the worker’s knowledge, practices and attitudes regarding coronavirus pandemic, it shows that the people of Chinese were at first worried about their population at the beginning when the outbreak occurred, however, after putting in place the measures that could improve the situation especially on the public, they raised the hopes of individuals on surviving the pandemic.

The author of the article also posited that more than 85% of the total Chinese population feared self-infection with the virus while 89.7% were able to follow the correct practices regarding the control of the spread of COVID-19.

Savić, Dobrica. “COVID-19 and work from home: Digital transformation of the workforce.” Grey Journal (TGJ) 16.2 (2020): 101-104.

From the article above, it is noted that after the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2019, in China, working from home was experienced in a many of the organizations and when the disease intensified, all offices and businesses were forced to close as a measure of combating the spread of corona-virus. (Savić, 102)

The author also notes that COVID-19 did not only facilitate working from home routine, it improved communication by making people to device the methods of communication that were highly used in China to ensure that employees could communicate with their employers with ease as they work from home.

He, Junyu, et al. “Comparative infection modeling and control of COVID-19 transmission patterns in China, South Korea, Italy and Iran.” Science of the Total Environment 747 (2020): 141447.

The spread of COVID-19 in China has reduced greatly, this is having been facilitated with the increase in the public education to the public by the health sector in the country. Employers also played a major role in reducing the spread of COVID-19 in China by allowing employees to work from home and put strict measures in place to ensure that all employees follow the moment they return to work in order to reduce the spread of COVID-19. (He, 750)

Another reason as to why China currently reports the lowest number of COVID-19 infections according to (He, 747), is the way the health sector responded by putting in place the preventive measures as well as treatments for those who had already conducted the disease.

Liu, Wei, Xiao-Guang Yue, and Paul B. Tchounwou. “Response to the COVID-19 epidemic: the Chinese experience and implications for other countries.” International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health 17.7 (2020): 2304.

China has several mechanisms in place for control of COVID-19 pandemic, (Liu,2304). Such measures include reporting to the public concerning he unexplained viral pneumonia outbreak that helped the public to take precautions in good time to avoid the spread of the disease.

Another response method the Chinese government used to ensure that the pandemic is controlled was manufacturer of local vaccines that have helped in boosting the immune system of the people of China helping them to resist the infections caused by Corona virus.

Kupferschmidt, Kai, and Jon Cohen. “Can China’s COVID-19 strategy work elsewhere?.” (2020): 1061-1062.

It is true that the strategies, policies and measures used by China to control the spread of COVID-19 disease can work in other countries. This is because all other countries are using the same measures, keeping distance in public places to ensure there is reduction in the spread of coronavirus, ensuring everyone is vaccinated, which improves the immunity of people, a strategy that has been used by almost every country.

China is unique in a way that it has the political system that is in place can gain public compliance with extreme measures, the country also has an extraordinary ability of doing labor-intensive, large-scale projects quickly. This is unlike other countries and therefore the measures that are used in China could prove difficult being adopted by other nations.

THESIS STATEMENT ASSIGNMENT:

For this assignment, here is a guide:

A.    How to write a thesis statement and what I expect

A good thesis statement will be a roadmap for the rest of your project. While this project is now a presentation instead of a paper, you should approach it with a similar perspective in terms of argument and organization. It will be a very important part of your project and will need to be well crafted, well written, and polished to excel.  It is possible that the thesis statement that you submit for this assignment will not be the thesis statement that you will end up with on your final project. I realize that this is a process, but at this point in your research you should have a good idea of what your argument (road map) will be. Now is the time to focus on your argument and work on polishing and crafting the quality of your thesis statement.

For this submission, you should submit a Word document or PDF file formatted as:
Your Name
Your topic (be specific – just a sentence will do)
Thesis Statement: (with your thesis statement sentence here).

NOTE: A thesis statement is ONE sentence (only). That is all I am looking to read here. If you are still struggling and feel that you need to include context, it is fine to include your entire or part of your introduction, but you must be aware and underline or bold your actual thesis statement. I want to be sure that you know what your argument is and that you understand that a thesis statement is one sentence ONLY.

B.    What is a thesis statement?

More than likely, once you submit your thesis statement, and I grade it, I will send it back with changes and suggestions. I would like you to be aware of a few things though, even before we get started. A good thesis statement will be the backbone of your paper. It will guide each paragraph and also make your paper much more interesting. What I am referring to when I say “thesis statement,” is an argument. Please be aware, that a college level history term paper or oral presentation is not just a random collection of facts. It needs to have an argument/or a point of view. I realize that some high schools and

possibly international students may not have encountered this before. However, I am absolutely positive that any college level course requires this. Trust me, I empathize with you, and have (as an undergrad and graduate student) written hundreds of papers that all included a strong thesis statement (and those that didn’t were usually sent back to me for rewriting).

C.    How should you word your thesis?

I encourage you to be both forceful and focused when writing a thesis statement. Although there are some courses that require you to write thesis statements that begin with “The purpose of this paper” or “I intend to prove…” I DO NOT WANT THAT!. Your thesis statement does not need “the purpose of this paper is…” because the thesis is the purpose of the paper. It does not need the pronoun “I”, “myself”, or “me”, because nobody else should be writing your paper. A few general examples:

1. “It is necessary that the Indian government puts a stronger emphasis on their national population policy to avoid a population crisis.”

2. “It is imperative for the Chinese government to consider the implications of an environmentally damaged country.”

3. “AIDS in South Africa is the single most dangerous threat to their democracy and economic growth, and only through education and proactive government policies will there be success.”

These are not perfect examples, but they do demonstrate that there is an inherent argument that the paper will then attempt to prove or demonstrate. This is where your research will pay off.

Keep in mind as well that you are doing history. For this quarter, you ARE historians. Historians do NOT write mysteries. At the beginning of the quarter you asked questions, at this point you are answering them. That is why you have spent time doing research – so you could answer your own questions. Now it is important that you answer your questions in the introduction. In effect the thesis statement is the PLOT of your project/paper/presentation. So, it is not your job to keep the audience guessing. You do not END the presentation with your thesis. It is RESTATED in the conclusion, but it is FIRST stated in your introduction/thesis statement! That is probably the one fact of a thesis statement that students are resistant to. You can console yourself with the fact that historians like to read the end of the book first!!!
