directly below the topic, write a very specific thesis sentence for a possible essay. 3 Then in brackets [These are brackets.] write a one sentence explanation of the body of the essay. This could be the series of subtopics and examples that will support your thesis or a quick explanation of the experience or argument you will use to support your thesis

.

Do this three times.

Note two things: 1. My semicolons are correct, but not because of the rule that both sides of a semicolon are independent clauses and could be complete sentences. There is a lesser semicolon rule that when you have long phrases with lots of commas you can use semicolons as a stronger comma for clarification of the parts. 2. Basically, this exercises is like writing an entire essay in two sentences. One sentence is the thesis, and the other is the body–without the details of course.

Examples :

Paragraph 5 says “Everybody worships something.” This idea looks at worshipping in a non-religious way. In that sense, what do you worship in a non-religious sense. One may try to figure this out by reflecting on where one chooses to dedicate his or her time and thoughts.

1 Several people I know construct their lives around and seek meaning in ways that are both idiosyncratic to them and emblematic of how people nowadays “worship” in strange ways. [My essay will use the examples of Eleanor, a doctor by day, who lives for running her daughter’s girl scout troupe; Jason, who is family man and chef in name only, but lives and breathes building model airplanes and entering them in competitions; and Janice who like a lone tree falling in the woods does not exist if the experience isn’t posted on social media.]

Jobs 1: If you agree with David Graeber’s ideas, what do you propose should be done to make the working conditions of the United States more humane. Remember that your ideas will meet opposition so part of your proposal would have to address combating that opposition.

2 There are several things I try to do in my position as a professor to try to make working conditions better for people in this country. [I try to get students to see that wealthy privileged people are deliberately misdirecting less educated people to keep the poor their disenfranchised servant class so that they themselves can maintain power; I try to encourage students to believe in their own self-worth that too often the culture and personal experience does not allow them to have; and finally I try to get students to understand that materialism and consumerism is a trap to keep them in debt and vulnerable to exploitation.]

Theme 1:

: Sometimes we get labeled as something by experts and that has an impact on how we see ourselves, for better or for worse. Describe a time you got labeled as something and the impact that had on you.

Theme 2:

Explain your strengths and weaknesses when it comes to resilience. Possibly you are great at handling a certain type of situation and not so good at handling others.

Theme 3

What do you think of the idea of positive addiction? Is it beneficial (or harmful) to look at good aspects of human behavior and motivation through the same lens as the negative one? If not, why should we regard them differently?
