What are the pros and cons for having agencies report information to these programs?
Respond to the following in minimum of 100:
Crime data is important because it gives us the information we need, such as, type of crime, demographics of the victims and perpetrators, corrections, recidivism and reentry, and court information. Both the Uniform Crime Report (UCR) and the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) programs were started to help the criminal justice department in their activities hence making the operations of the police officers and the law enforcement officers more effective and efficient by collecting and reporting data on various crimes. The UCR was introduced in the 1930s and is still today a reliable way to provide criminal statistics. The NIBRS was implemented to improve the overall quality of crime data collected by law enforcement. One of the differences is on the hierarchy rule where UCR employs the hierarchy rule to recognize the most serious offense per incident, whereas under NIBRS, agencies are required to submit detailed information about all offenses committed in a single incident (Pattavina et al., 2017).
An advantage of these agencies is that they give detailed information on the crimes, such as, the arrests that are being made in the communities. On the other hand, it does not offer information on the criminals. It is good to know about the criminal to see if they have any past crimes or to get to the reason of the crime. Also, these programs do not offer data in a quick manner which makes the investigation process longer as well.

The UCR (Uniform Crime Reports) is a system that collects data by the FBI from all the Law Enforcement agencies across America. It keeps a record from every department of the type of crime that is being reported by each agency. It provides reliable statistics for use in Law Enforcement and It gives students of criminal justice, researchers, the media, and the public information that is being gathered. The program has been providing crime statistics since the 1930’s. The UCR Program includes data from more than 18,000 city, university, and college, county, state, tribal, and federal Law Enforcement agencies.
NIBRS (National Incident-Based Reporting System) is an improved system of the overall quality of crime data collected by Law Enforcement. NIBRS captures more in-depth details on each single crime incident as well on separate offenses within the same incident (including information on the victims, known offenders, relationships between the two parties, and property crime. Unlike data reported through UCR Programs traditional Summary Reporting System (SRS)-an aggregate monthly tally of crimes- NIBRS goes much deeper because of its ability to provide circumstances and context for crimes like location, time, and whether the incident was cleared.
