STRATEGIC ISSUES FACING THE MANAGEMENT OF CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS. A CASE STUDY OF DUBAI CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRIES.
INTRODUCTION:
Construction projects takes place on daily basis around the world. This is as a result of the growing population. In recent time, there has been a global campaign on the reduction of carbon emission and this has been posing a problem in the management of construction projects. Also, there has been lingering issue of health and safety which has been a major concern in the world today. In the past, architects and engineers were known to be in charge of construction projects.This resulted in complications in projects as all parties were only concerned about their respective activities. To solve this lingering problem, project management was adopted in construction projects and ever since there has been a significant improvement in the construction industry.
PROPOSED SCOPE OF PROJECT:
The project will be focus on the construction industry in Dubai, United Arab Emirates(UAE). Dubai is one of the cities in the UAE and has numerous iconic construction projects as it is one of the major construction sites in the world today. The project will cover large scale construction projects in the emirate of Dubai.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM:
As earlier stated that project management was introduced into the construction industry to serve as the coordinator of projects, there are strategic issues being encountered in construction projects. Health and safety has been a major factor that affects the delivery of projects. Most construction projects nowadays, ignores the original reason project management was introduced to the industry which now affects the overall performance of projects in terms of cost, duration and quality.
PROPOSED OBJECTIVE OF PROJECT:
The major objective of this project will be to gather and analyze data for construction projects in Dubai so as to ensure that strategic issues like health and safety, lean and communication are efficiently managed. The following objectives are part of this study;
1) To investigate the Health and safety appetites of construction companies and improve on it.
2) To determine the rate of wastes in construction projects and to proffer solutions to it adopting lean principles.
3) To determine the communication issues faced during projects.
PROPOSED METHODOLOGY:
At the preliminary stage, a survey would be carried out to identify the challenges in the management of construction projects in Dubai through the aid of questionnaires given to construction workers. Healthand safety data will be collected from the filled questionnaires, material supply and usage data would be collected as well as communication data. The data would then be analyzed to determine these strategic issues and proffer solutions to them.
