Remarkable Race: Writing Assignment 1 Chapters 2
and 3 Assignment Directions
You have submitted an audition video for the reality show,
The Remarkable Race. The Remarkable Race is a television reality show that has
people from all over the world participate in a global race with one winner
taking home a million dollars. The people who participate in the race must
endure different activities and challenges each week in cities all over the
world. Some of those activities and challenges include mental tasks, physical
activities and collaboration with other people. The producers assistant has
just called you and asked for you to complete a paper as a final part of your
audition. He says you should prepare to share with the committee why you are
suited for this show.
The assistant encourages you to talk about your motivation
to win and how the unique things about you make you a good candidate for the
reality tv show. The assistant suggests you think about how you would describe
yourself to the committee based on what the committee calls pathways. These
pathways include your culture, your gender, reflected appraisals and social
comparison. Make sure you define, explain and apply the term for each of the
four pathways.
The audition paper you are about to write should include an
introduction and a conclusion in addition to the characteristics and pathways
you write about.
Step One:
Describe in one paragraph how your self-concept could help you win The
Remarkable Race. First create a list of 10 characteristics you would consider
to be part of your self-concept. Next, using complete sentences, describe how
these 10 characteristics represent your self-concept. Be sure to define the
term selfconcept as it is described in your textbook and class materials.
Step Two: In paragraph format, analyze how
four of those 10 characteristics you just listed came to be part of your
self-concept (through the pathways of gender, culture, reflected appraisal, and
social comparison). Create a paragraph for each of the four pathways by first
defining the term for the pathway, then explaining what that term means in your
own words. You should then identify your characteristic and explain how that
applies to the pathway. Finish the paragraph for each pathway by explaining how
this characteristic could help you win the Remarkable Race.
Overall Expectations:
Your paper should
be typed, approximately 3-4 pages long, and double spaced.
The paper should
also be proofread, and mistakes in grammar, spelling, sentence structure,
formatting and other areas of paper mechanics should be kept to a minimum.
Be sure to include
a complete introduction to the paper that includes a thesis statement
introducing the main ideas of the paper.
Organize the body
of the paper into main ideas that fit with your thesis statement.
Include a
definitive conclusion that summarizes the key themes in the paper. Include
proper in-text citations in either APA (see
https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/02/ ) or MLA (see
https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/02/ ) format.
Be certain that you
include the textbook definitions of the concepts you use and that you cite
these definitions correctly. A reference list (see
https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/05/ ) or works cited (see
https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/05/ ) should be included at the
end of your paper.
