Notes for essay

? You need to identify just ONE real organisation, within either tourism, hospitality or the events sector, with a real problem about managing people.

o That is, the main business focus (strategy) of that company should be at its heart tourism, hospitality or events.

o It is strongly recommended that you use a different organisation for the case study than any you may have used before for a previous assignments while at

Brookes. This will help avoid any accidental (self-) plagiarism.

? Collate a range of evidence that will demonstrate the context of the sector and the organisation

? You will need to analyse and evaluate evidence related to managing people and problem in this area

? You also need to evaluate the supporting evidence if you use the appendices.

? All company data and information needs to be public domain.

? You cannot collect primary research: this is not a requirement of this assessment, and you do not have ethical approval to do so.

? Following an introduction to the report, you should introduce your chosen company to support and set the context for your case study report.

? Please include key organisational information and data about employment and employees within the company.

? This should include establishing the company’s importance to their respective sector.

? All reports should analyse the company’s HRM or SHRM approach, and in addition analyse the company’s approach to equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI).

? Please integrate academic, peer-reviewed theories, concepts and/or models throughout this section, and cross reference to the appropriate appendices.

THE EMPLOYEE JOBS – What type or category of employee will you spotlight to analyse?

? Your report should identify ONE employee job type to exemplify with real-life scenarios of managing people. Examples of these might include: This list is not

exhaustive.

o Chef (may be described as: core and/or peripheral resource, maybe scarce resource for most senior/specialised)

o Pilot (may be described as: core and resource, probably scarce resource for most senior/specialised)

o Front desk (may be described as: most likely core or might have some additional peripheral (contracted/agency) staff for peak demand cover?);

o F&B manager (may be described as: maybe core or peripheral (contracted);

o Bar Staff (may be described as: most likely core plus likely to have a pool of additional peripheral (contracted/agency) staff for peak demand cover?);

o Housekeeping (Depends on the set up of the organisation: Might have directly employed housekeeping management, yet most actual housekeeper might be

core/part time directly employed; and/or plus likely to have a pool of additional peripheral (agency) staff for peak demand cover? They of course might

completely outsource the housekeeping function, and just have housekeeping management in-house);

o Event project manager (may be described as: maybe core or peripheral (contracted); professionally-accredited?)

o Festival volunteer (may be described as: peripheral temporary resources, unpaid, most likely very short term relationship)

? What information can you find on the employee job type on the company website, or other public domain sites?

? Look for academic articles to support your analysis and evaluation of the employee job type.

? What other information can you find on such jobs within academic empirical evidence – you will need to support your claims with academic theory, models and

concepts.

? You should research real data and information about your chosen company and about chosen employee job type.
