American History II
War Essay
The following essay must be 1400 words and must be typed, double spaced,
in font 12. Grammar, spelling, and punctuation count.
Over the course of the semester, we have looked at many different wars in which
the United States has been involved. There was the Spanish American War, the
Philippine War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam
War. You are not asked to go beyond the Vietnam War in this paper.
In this essay I would like you to discuss how the US explained their involvement
in each of these wars. Why did we feel the need to declare war in these conflicts?
I would also like you to comment on whether you believe our entry into these
wars was justified, and to explain why or why not. Do not generalize, discuss
each war separately.

You need to use at least five scholarly sources in answering these questions. You
also need to cite those sources using the Turabian or Chicago Manual of Style
method. This method involves using footnotes and also requires a separate
bibliography page where each source is listed in alphabetical order by the
author’s last name.

Take note that you do not repeat footnote numbers. Footnotes are sequential so
even if you cite the same source, it will have a different footnote number.
Example: if you cite an article by Smith twice, you would go to References:1
Insert Citation. Select the Style of citation: Chicago. Then fill in the information
it asks for. It will automatically number the footnote for you. The next time you
use Smith, you would go Insert Citation2. You would then type the information
again, but because you already used Smith, you can shorten the footnote and just
put Smith, xxxxxx, 83. The 83 represents the page number. But it is a separate
footnote.

Take time to look at the examples on Canvas as this does count for a significant
part of your grade on the paper.
1 Smith, John. How to do xxxxx. Oxford: New York, 2011, 45.2 Smith, xxxxxx, 83.
