Purpose
The purpose of this final paper is for students to apply their knowledge thus far about ethics and societal impacts. Students will use their research skills to explore a problem happening in the world and connect a technology that could help resolve this issue.
What is a problem-solution essay?
Problem solution essays are a popular form of persuasion. You must describe a problem, convince the reader to care about the problem, propose a solution, and be prepared to dismantle any objections.

How to Submit
Submit your paper as a word document through Canvas.
Objectives
For this paper, choose a problem that is impacting one of the areas we have discussed so far: health, education, government, and environment. NOTE: entertainment is NOT an option for this final paper because midterms were focused on entertainment. Next, choose a SPECIFIC technology/technological process that will help resolve the problem you are discussing. NOTE: you may NOT choose a technology or topic that you discussed for your midterm paper! So, if you did VR for midterm, you may not discuss VR as a technology for this final paper.
Within your paper, you must connect 1 form of ethics that we have learned about in this class: Utilitarianism, Deontology, Virtue ethics, or Professional Ethics. Use one of these perspectives to support your awareness and/or solution for the problem you are addressing. Make sure you state clearly which perspective you are using.
Also be sure to discuss some pros/cons about your technology of choice.
Requirements
Paper length= 5 pages. This means that your writing is five full pages, not including references or other necessary pages.
APA formatting= Be sure to include: a title page, an abstract page (150-200words), and a reference page (remember to ?hanging? indent your reference page sources?this is found in paragraph settings), as well as proper in-text citations. NOTE: failure to accurately cite your sources will be considered as plagiarism and will result in a zero for your final paper grade. Your text should be double spaced with zero space in between paragraphs (check your paragraph settings) and Times New Roman 12pt font.
A clear thesis statement that addresses the issue & technology of focus for your paper. View class materials on how to form a thesis statement.
You must use 5 credible sources. At least 3 of these sources should be scholarly and 2 can be credible non scholarly for this paper. Utilize the various databases located through the Atkins Library, JSTOR, or even Google Scholar. I will allow only 1 credible video to be utilized (documentary, tedtalk, podcast, etc.); if you have any questions about whether or not a video source will be considered credible, ask me in advance! Wikipedia will NOT be considered a credible source for this paper–it may be a good start to understand your topic, and perhaps there are other credible references listed on the page, but do not use Wikipedia as a source.
I will allow 1 block quote that does not exceed 4 lines for this longer paper and only if you really need it or if this quote supports your thesis. Remember, the longer the quote, the longer you need to analyze/explain the quote’s significance and connection to your point. For example, if I use a shorter quote, I may only need 1-2 sentences to connect its relevance. If I have a 4 line quote, I will need 3 sentences to really flesh out the relevance.
Helpful Writing Tips
Apply the rhetorical triangle: who is the speaker? Who is your audience? What is your message? What is your purpose?
Have a clear thesis statement that the reader can follow throughout your entire paper. Every paragraph should help build your thesis.
Remember my 4 E?s: ENGAGE with your text, ELABORATE on what you are saying, use EXAMPLES to support your information and claims, and EXPLAIN how your information connects to the overall topic.
In your concluding paragraph, be sure to answer the “so what” question. Your audience just spent time reading your paper, SO WHAT? Why does your topic matter? What is the take away?
Read all of the objectives and requirements for this paper to meet all of the expectations.
PROOFREAD your work?multiple times! Also try to have someone else peer-review with you. Multiple perspectives can be helpful. Remember that the Writing Resources Center is a helpful resource throughout your writing process.
Avoid first (I, we) and second person (you) writing.
