Please select three essay questions from the list below and write a thoughtful essay in your own words that shows your understanding of the stories and how the author?s themes apply to everyday life.
1)The theme of the coming of age of an eight-year old Afro American boy is poignantly presented in ?The Sky Is Gray.? How does the author Ernest J. Gaines develop this theme? How does the reader know the child is learning and can hope he will grow into an upright, mature person?
2)Alice Walker presents the conflict of tradition versus progress when she analyzes the meaning of heritage in her story ?Everyday Use.? How does she present this theme through her story?
3)The critic Innes has said that one of the most important themes of Achebe?s tale ?Vengeful Creditor? is ?the importance of class interest in the denial of individual fulfillment.? How does Achebe develop this theme? How is the issue of free primary education and its rejection deeply related to Innes?s interpretation?
4)Nadine Gordimer?s story ?Town and Country Lovers? explores the profound influence that a racist society has on personal relationships, and specifically on interracial love affairs. Analyze how the lovers in this tale were affected by the South African apartheid regime.
5)Select two stories of your choice and apply the Elements of Literary Analysis to them and also reflect on the author?s purpose for writing the story. Also discuss your opinion on how these elements apply to psychological processes.
