SOCI306  Race and Ethnicity
Week 5 Forum
Economic Inequality
The social standing of the various racial/ethnic groups within the U.S. varies greatly, from the stereotypes of some as “lazy” and others as “overachievers.”
To explore these issues, first, read:  Ridgeway, C. L., & Kricheli-Katz, T. Intersecting cultural beliefs in social relations: gender, race, and class binds and freedoms. (2013). Gender & Society, Volume: 27 issue: 3, page(s): 294-318. https://doi.org/10.1177/0891243213479445, available in the APUS library here:  http://ezproxy.apus.edu/login?url=http://www.jstor.org/stable/23486630?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents
Next, select a U.S. state and, in the areas of education, income, occupation/employment, and housing, use the internet to find the latest information on the following questions:
1) Which minority group has come the closest to equality with the dominant group in your selected state?
2) Which minority group has the farthest to go?
3) How do intersections of identities as described in the Ridgeway & Kricheli-Katz article help to explain some of the patterns in the state you selected?
Instructions for all Forums:
Each week, learners will post one initial post per week.  This post must demonstrate comprehension of the course materials, the ability to apply that knowledge in the real world.  Learners will engage with the instructor and peers throughout the learning week.  To motivate engaged discussion, posts are expected to be on time with regular interaction throughout the week.  All posts should demonstrate college level writing skills. To promote vibrant discussion as we would in a face to face classroom, formatted citations and references are not required.  Quotes should not be used at all, or used sparingly.  If you quote a source quotation marks should be used and an APA formatted citation and reference provided.
