E-Portfolio Assignment No. 1
For this week?s topic on Worker?s Compensation I pulled an article from the New York
Times describing the stigma surrounding workers compensation in more dangerous work
environments. Workers compensation varies at different levels of corporations and often times
may be unheard of in certain settings. However, in jobs that possess a higher degree of danger
and pose more of a threat for injury the phrase might be commonly heard. However, the numbers
associated with providing workers compensation can be rather costly. Therefore, it is common
that companies that are more prone to produce injuries will often provide incentives for their
workers to remain as a safe as possible. As described in the article, employers will offer their
workers ?Safety Bucks? in exchange for a week free of injury. These safety bucks are essentially
currency in the form of coupons that can be redeemed at local grocery stores and restaurants.
However, it is noted that providing such incentives can create an overall adverse effect. For
example, employees will be less likely to report injuries in order to collect their ?Safety Bucks?.
This can prove to be detrimental as the injury can develop to be something much more serious.
In conclusion, a good workers compensation policy is absolutely necessary in each corporation
and should be contingent on the degree of risk that the job requires.
