Lesson 10 Discussion

Reading material is in chapter 13-14

Find a banner advertisement from a popular brand online and click on it. Where does it take you? Now compare that landing page to the company?s direct URL. Explain your experience.

I looked up a random photography blog, and near the footer of their page there was a banner advertisement for Lee Elements – a site that offers high-performance photography lenses and other gear. When I clicked the banner it took me to their ad campaign?s landing site. At the top and middle of the page, there were button links that said ?View Products? and ?Discover More? to encourage visitors to check out the rest of the website. This landing page promoted their newest product range with enticing action verbs and language that sounded compelling/enthusiastic. I?m not a pro photographer but the way they described their products even made me want to view and buy them. The bottom of the page also had a?contact?form and option to find the nearest seller (depending on UK or other regions of the world).

When I looked up the company?s direct URL, the link in my search bar changed from ?leeelements.com? to ?leefiltersdirect.com?. The direct page displayed all of their products with categories on the left; an option to sort by price, spelling, etc.; how many to display on a page, and if the user prefers grid or list view. This direct page also had some text that was full of SEO, although they didn?t jam pack it to make it seem obnoxious. They used the keywords and phrases to describe what different product lines and features did in an easy-to-read format.

For this?assignment, I started on the homepage of the Miami Herald newspaper. On the top of the website was a an advertisement for 1-800flowers.com. When I clicked on the banner ad, it took me to the direct website for 1-800 flowers. The direct landing page was for two dozen assorted roses within the 1-800 flowers website. I am not sure why it took me directly to two dozen roses opposed to the main website, maybe because the two dozen roses are a little expensive and gives the company more profit and revenue.

I think sometimes people get confused between direct company websites and third party websites. I remember when I worked in the hotel industry this would happen a lot. A lot of people would think they were booking directly with Hilton but instead it was a third party. The websites looked almost identical and if you didn’t travel much you wouldn’t know the difference. The only difference was the URL was just a little different, normally only by one letter. But again, if you didn’t travel much you would have no idea!
