Description

Purpose

:

In two of the readings for this module, the topic of coffee was discussed primarily in relationship to identity markers: class (Roseberry 1996) and gender (Reitz 2007). Coffee has been the topic of research for many scholars though and has also been analyzed for its association with neighborliness (Taylor 1981), its role in American history (McDonald and Tapik 2008) and for the unfamiliar language used by some coffee providers like Starbucks (Elliott 2002). These are just a few examples of the ways in which coffee has been used as a tool to investigate a number of different dimensions of culture. In this assignment, we are asking you to also use coffee and the coffee consumption as a lens through which to analyze human behavior.

Skills and Knowledge:

Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:

  • Apply ethnographic interviewing methods
  • Describe the challenges of collecting ethnographic data
  • Identify patterns in qualitative data and develop reasonable hypotheses to explain these patterns
  • Analyze people?s preferences around a particular food item (coffee)
  • Reflect on your role as a researcher and your perceptions of food and identity

Task

:

For this assignment, you are being asked to conduct six short, semi-structured interviews with others about their coffee consumption habits. Semi-structured means that you do not have to follow the script exactly and you can ask probing follow-up questions such as ?Can you tell me more?? of ?What else do I need to know?? All people you interview for this assignment must be at least 18 years of age and must be aware that they are being interviewed for a class assignment. Interviews can be conducted face-to-face, through video conferencing, or via telephone. It is NOT acceptable to email questions to a respondent and have them send back responses. Part of the purpose of this assignment is to gain experience with ethnographic interviewing.

You are being asked to interview six people because research has shown that this is the minimum number of interviews needed to identify patterns but most research typically relies on sample sizes of at least 30-60 so we recognize your sample will be quite small. The goal though is to start looking for patterns in the responses you collect. You must identify three patterns that tie to course themes (e.g. food and gender, food and class, etc.). Be thinking about these potential patterns as you choose your interviewees as you will want some diversity in your sample. By patterns, we mean similarities or differences across your sample. A pattern could be defined by the absence of certain characteristics as well as their presence.

Six interview protocols (a list of your interview questions) is provided to you in the template. You are responsible for submitting these protocols appropriately filled out with your respondents? answers (see below) and for answering the analysis questions that are also provided in the template.

Interviews

Once you are familiar with the interview protocol and have identified six respondents who meet the qualifications (i.e. are 18 and are willing to be interviewed), you can begin your interviewing process. Please be sure that the respondent knows that they are being interviewed for an assignment for a class at ASU and that you are not collecting their name and that all other information collected will not be shared with anyone except the course instructional team. Tell them as well that they can choose to skip any question that they do not feel comfortable answering. Also, please let them know before you begin the interview that you expect the interview to take about 5-10 minutes. If the respondent has any concerns about the assignment, please provide them with my name and email address (Dr. Rhian Stotts,

[email protected])

.

When you are conducting the interview, you need to take notes. These notes need to be recorded within the interview protocol (included in the template) so that the responses are associated with the question asked. You should write down what the respondent says as closely as possible. If you are able to capture the respondent?s exact words, enclose them in quotation marks (? ?). If you can?t capture the exact words and need to write a summary, enclose it in triangle brackets (< >). You can use a combination of quotation marks and triangle brackets within recording a single response. Everything you record from the respondent should either be in quotation marks or triangle brackets. Your interview notes can be hand-written onto the interview template as long the template is provided and your handwriting is legible.

You can record your interview if you choose as long as you have permission from the respondent to do so but you are not expected to submit a complete transcript for this assignment.

Probing

In open-ended interviewing, you may need to probe the interviewee in order to get a detailed response. Probing is different than prompting in that prompting will put words into your respondent’s mouth (similar to the leading question issue above). For example, suppose that you asked a person to describe themselves. After they give their initial answer, you should not respond by saying ?Would you call yourself nice?? Not only will you likely get a yes or no response, but you have provided answer that the respondent may not normally have given. In addition to given non-verbal cues (like nodding your head or looking at your respondent) to encourage them to keep talking, you can use common probing questions to follow up on each of the interview questions you have developed so that you are sure you have detailed responses to each of your questions. Here is a list of recommended probes.

  • “Can you tell me more?”
  • “What else do I need to know?”
  • “Is there anything else you’d like to add?”

You can also explain questions to a respondent as long as you don’t feed them answers. For example, for the question “What type of coffee drink do you prepare yourself? That is, what types of ingredients and preparations methods do you use or add to your coffee?” It would NOT be appropriate to ask “Do you take your coffee black?” as the probe. Instead, an acceptable probe would be “Do you add anything to your coffee before you drink it?”

Once you have completed your interviews, you need to complete the interview analysis (provided in the template). When submitting this assignment, you need to submit the six interview protocols with responses properly recorded and the interview analysis.

Observations

In the analysis section of this assignment, you are required to look for patterns (i.e. similarities and differences across your sample) and to hypothesize reasons for these patterns (recognizing that your sample size is small and so may not reflect patterns that would occur in a larger sample). Your observations could also be based on the lack of a pattern that you expected to see based upon academic research (think for example about what patterns in coffee consumption were predicted by your assigned readings in this module. Here is an example of three observation write-ups IF the assignment was based on interviews about meat consumption, rather than coffee.

  • Five of the six respondents (Interviews #2-6) in my study indicated that they eat meat at least once a day. When asked to estimate the amount of meat consumed, four out of six ate more than the daily amount recommended by the USDA. This pattern shows the high levels of meat consumption in our society. In the lecture ?Nutrition Transition? (Stotts, 2022a), we learned that learned that meat consumption has been growing steadily around the world and that in the US, the average person consumes more meat than is recommended by the USDA so I believe my observation is likely representative of a wider pattern.
  • All three male interviewees (Interviews #2-4) indicated that they eat meat daily for at least two meals while one of my female interviewees stated that she was a vegetarian (Interview #1) and thus never ate meat and the other two females (Interviews #5 and 6) claimed to only eat meat once a day. This pattern of men eating more meat appears to be in line with expectations covered in the lecture ?Food and Gender? (Stotts, 2022b) regarding the associated between meat and masculinity. I hypothesize that with a large sample, the pattern of men eating more meat would hold given our cultural associations that ?real men? eat meat.
  • When asked what type of meat they purchased to prepare themselves, one respondent (Interview #6) stated that she focused on buying ?organic? meat. The other respondents who ate meat (Interviews #2-5) stated that they primarily focused on price. I expected that these differences might align with class differences. In the lecture ?Food and Class,? Dr. Stotts (2022c) covered research on differences in language on menus and stated that terms like ?organic? were associated with expensive restaurants. Additionally, I expected that if my respondents were concerned about price, they might identify with a lower social class. Unfortunately, my sample had little diversity in terms of social class. Five out of six respondents (Interviews #2-6) marked middle class and the only respondent who marked working class (#1) was a vegetarian.

Criteria for Success:

In order to be successful in this assignment, do the following:

  • Download and use the template appropriately
  • Use proper spelling and grammar, including sentence and paragraph format when answering the analysis questions.
  • Check out the rubric to see how the assignment will be graded. Compare your completed assignment to the rubric to ensure you have met every expectation.
  • ASK QUESTIONS IF ANYTHING IS UNCLEAR!!! Please use the Hallway Conservations board to ask us if you are unclear about any of the expectations of this assignment.

In order to be a good interviewer, please try to practice these skills:

  • Gentle: Let people finish talking. Sometimes people need a moment to think. In normal conversation, when someone pauses, we often interject. An interview is not normal conversation and pausing may prompt the respondent to provide more information.
  • Sensitive: Listen attentively to what is said and how it is said. Make sure that the respondent knows that you are listening and are truly interesting in what they are saying.
  • Remembering: If necessary and possible, make sure that you indicate to your respondent that you remember what they have already said. For example, if in an earlier question, the respondent already mentioned that they moved to the current country because of civil war in their country of origin, you could say ?I know you already mentioned that you moved here because of civil war in [country of origin] but I was wondering if you could provide more information on why you immigrated to [current country]?
  • Balanced: Remember, and interview is not a normal conversation which is usually 50/50. You want to avoid talking too much as you are primarily interested in what the respondent has to say. However, you also want to avoid talking too little, which may make the respondent think you are not interested or that they are not providing you the type of information you are looking for.
  • Unbiased: Avoid sharing your own opinions on topics with respondents until after the interview has been completed.
  • Ethically sensitive: Be sensitive to the ethical dimension of interviewing, ensuring the interviewee appreciates why you are interviewing them and that their answers will be treated confidentially.
