You are a correctional officer at a private jail which is a federal contracted holding facility for the United States Marshal Service (USMS). While working you have observed that some of your colleagues, also jailers, are bringing items into the jail for inmates which includes notes from family members that are supposed to be submitted through screening. You confront one of the jailers and they tell you that there is nothing wrong with it and to keep your mouth shut. You do so in fear of having problems at work. A few weeks later you arrive at work to find that the US Marshals have arrested the jailers for passing contraband into the jail and that they want to interview you because you have been accused by your colleagues of doing the same. Should you have reported them when you first took notice of the problem? Do you think that you have committed an offense by not saying anything and are now just as guilty? Chapter 13 discusses the concepts of control, custody and care. Which one of these concepts would be impeded by the aforementioned scenario?
