Persuasive Messages
Discussion 1
Identify a situation in which you were persuaded to do something that you
might not have done under different circumstances. Consider a business
situation if possible. If you can’t think of a personal experience, search online
for scam messages or other persuasive.
1. Present the message as best you can from memory or directly from an
online source.
2. What persuaded you (or someone else) to take action? What methods of
influence (Cialdini, p. 298-299) were applied?
3. What are the ethical implications of the persuasive attempts? How is
persuasion different from manipulation?

Last year I experienced a situation in which I was persuaded to buy a product, through the
publicity, that I might have not bought in a different circumstance. It was several days that I saw
different publicity about the Dyson hairdryer, in which the girls that were using it had perfect hairs.
I thought that, since I needed to buy a new hairdryer, that could be the perfect one. I would have
been able to dry my hair, and have perfect curls without using the hair straightener, which was
ruining my hair. All the different publicities were showing videos of girls that were doing their hair,
through all the process. At the end of the video they were satisfied, and they also said that it did
not take long to do their hair. I decided to buy that, and I spent a lot of money on it, to just realize
that what the commercial sowed was not real.
I was persuaded by the fact that they showed the result that seemed perfect. They showed
happy customers, beautiful girls with beautiful hair. Most important they showed happy
customers and they report all the positive reviews made by clients. Since they already reported
reviews, I didn?t feel the need to search them by myself and I trusted what they showed.
Usually, when the goal of persuasion is to be ethical, one should achieve three goals that
are exploring another person?s viewpoint, explaining firms. viewpoint, and creating resolutions. In
this case, Dyson?s firm was not ethical since they explained their viewpoint, but they did not care
about the actual result of the product. In fact, they are selling a product that does not reflect what
it should do.
Persuasion and Manipulation are two different things, ?manipulation involves attempting to
influence others by some level of deception so you can achieve your interests? (Cardon, p. 325).
People can manipulate others by persuasive messages, but usually, when it comes to persuasion
it?s referred to a positive action while manipulation is referred to something with a negative
outcome. In fact, the intention of persuasion is nobler, while manipulation has a negative
intention

Decision-Making Styles
Although we’d like to persuade quickly and easily, persuasion can take a long
time. Note Kessler’s five touch points (in Cardon, p. 310): the sniff, the story,
the date, the ask, and the close. Consider a business or job-related (college
included) situation in which your goal is to persuade. Describe the situation and
apply each of the touch points in creating a plan to persuade. Be sure to respond
to each other with substantive feedback.

I?m currently working as a social media manager for a gym that offers various types of gymnastics,
starting from yoga to self-defense. My job is to promote all their activity through their social media
platform. In the past month, they had to increase courses? prices due to the pandemic, but they
also added Kung fu lessons. We recently changed gym, which is bigger than the last one, and we
now have more instruments and supplies. Since our previous gym was very small, we don?t have
many customers and we need to grow our network to have a higher income. Lately, I called my
boss because I wanted to change the way that our Instagram profile was managed. I proposed to
make our instructors introduce themselves through our platform and specify what is their goal
and what do they would like to make customers achieve at the end of the course. I also proposed
to open a Q&A space on our Instagram profile, where people can ask us everything, they would
like to know about how we work or everything that is not clear.
My goal was to persuade him and make him agree with me on my proposals. I know that this is
not his only work, on the contrary, this is what he does in his free time for passion. Since this is his
passion, he wants it to succeed, and when it comes to that he is always enthusiastic and talkative
(The sniff: I thought of what type of person I had in front of me, and what he would have liked
more as a proposal). I gained his attention by saying that my first goal was to grow our customers
by making our brand known on social media, without spending more money. After he listened to
all the new ideas that I wanted to fulfill he was really excited. I described the problem, that was
the fact that we did not have new customers after the opening of our new gym, and I said that
paying more attention and putting more effort into our social media platform would have
increased the registrations? numbers. I also specified that he wouldn?t need to spend time because
I would have taken care of it, but I needed our instructors? attention and cooperation (The ask: I
asked him help to have all the instructors to cooperate with me). I also proposed a different idea
in case that one would not have worked. This idea was to collaborate with schools, having more
children come and try more activities that the gym has to offer. (The story and the close: I
explained what I wanted to do, and I also proposed a backup plan as a close to make him think
that I knew what to do in case my first idea would have not worked)
At the end of the call, I said that he didn?t need to give me an answer right
now, (The Date) but he was so excited that he wanted to start immediately, by
having the instructors write a short introduction and description of the course and
publicizing them as soon as possible. He was also interested in the backup idea,
and he was thinking of doing that too.
