II) Paper Assignment:
The written assignment will require you to write a sociology essay discussing the documentary
Inequality for All by Robert Reich, available here: http://inequalityforall.com/#see-the-film
1) Write a sociological essay engaging the content of the documentary dealing with the
increasing economic inequality in the USA. Do not spend more than one sentence on the
biographical elements dealing with Reich the person.
2) Discuss the content of the documentary with regard to the causes and effects of the
social processes discussed. Be specific and concrete in your treatment of the topics
(rising inequality in wealth, income, debt, housing, public services, taxes, types of jobs,
automation, trade, impact on politics) discussed in the documentary. You are not
required to discuss each and every topic. Many strong papers do a deep dive into a few
topics. Other strong papers carry out a broad survey of the range of issues discussed.

3) Incorporate concepts from Sociology Project 2.5 in your essay. Use concepts from the
readings and discussion board for this course. Other outside sources from legitimate
(especially scholarly) sources are encouraged but not required. If you have issues
discerning the legitimacy of a source, share it with me and we will discuss. Many strong
papers only reference Inequality for All, Sociology Project 2.5 and discussion board
posts and or notes from the class.
4) You will be graded on how well you mobilize evidence and logic to argue for the truth of
your claims. Feel free to agree or disagree with the documentary, the book, and or the
professor. But in all cases, use logic and empirical evidence to support your position(s).
Formal Requirements:
1) The paper must be at least 6 full pages (but no more than 9 pages) of written text (not
including the cover page and reference page).
2) You should have a clear introduction, organized body of the paper and a conclusion. If
you are uncertain about how to properly construct the paper, please visit the Writing
Center http://dept.harpercollege.edu/writing_center/.
3) Writing is to be formal, academic, and analytic and be well-edited. Do not submit your
first draft. Be sure to edit for proper grammar, mechanics, syntax and style.
4) All papers must be typed and double-spaced. Use 12-point font. Each page should be
numbered and all margins should be 1 inch.
5) Include a cover page with your name, name of the class and section, the professor’s
name and the date. Include a title for the paper.
6) Include a reference page listing the sources you have cited in the text. APA, ASA and
MLA format are the accepted style formats.
7) Paraphrase, don’t quote. Use in-text citation to cite your sources. For the film cite the
minute in the film that is pertinent to the point you are making. For example: “Reich
says XYZ (Reich 2013: PQ)” where PQ is the minute in the documentary that you are
referring to. For the e-version of Sociology Project 2.5 cite the section of the text you
are referencing
