MALE SPEAKER: Frank, good morning.
MALE SPEAKER 2: Hi, Michael.
MALE SPEAKER: Where’s your friend?
MALE SPEAKER 2: She couldn’t come today.
MALE SPEAKER: What’s going on. You don’t seem to be yourself.
MALE SPEAKER 2: I couldn’t sleep last night. I’ve been worrying about my son having
to take care of me if something happens, if I get sick or injured. He already wants me to
come live with him.
MALE SPEAKER: Maybe we could go sit on that bench and talk a bit more, out of the
way. Have you had anything to eat today, Frank?
MALE SPEAKER 2: I haven’t been hungry. Plus everything tastes bland, like I’m eating
dirt. It’s been 10 years since my partner, Jose, died. And I just don’t see the point in
continuing much longer.
MALE SPEAKER: It must be difficult to live without Jose.
MALE SPEAKER 2: Yeah, usually, I’m so good. But lately-MALE SPEAKER: It’s more challenging?
MALE SPEAKER 2: I just don’t feel like doing anything. The truth is, I told my friend I
wasn’t walking today. I didn’t want her to see me like this.
MALE SPEAKER: Have you been thinking about suicide?
MALE SPEAKER 2: Sometimes, just about how I’d get to be with Jose. And it would be
easier. But I wouldn’t do it.
MALE SPEAKER: I want to make sure you’re safe and that you have support. Who
could you call?
MALE SPEAKER 2: My son. But I don’t want to burden him. He’s so busy.

MALE SPEAKER: I’m sure he’d want to know, regardless.
MALE SPEAKER 2: Yeah, it’s just embarrassing.
MALE SPEAKER: I understand. But lots of people feel this way, sometimes. And it’s not
a character flaw or something to be ashamed of. Anyone else?
MALE SPEAKER 2: I could call my doctor. She’s always been helpful. And she could
see if maybe I need to change my medication or get checked out.
MALE SPEAKER: A primary care provider is an excellent option. There are also
programs at Sunrise that could help, social events and wellness programs that are open
to all seniors in the community. There’s even a grief program.
MALE SPEAKER 2: Thanks. I’ll talk to my son and check in with my doctor, to start. The
grief group sounds good, too.
MALE SPEAKER: I am glad that you are getting outside, even though you don’t feel
well. I know you like to be out here in the park with the fresh air and sunshine. Would
you like to use my cell phone to call your son?
