Direct oral message topic development
The topic is just the general area, you will have to decide what you
are going to say about
this topic. So, you will need to spend some time generating ideas or
looking up ideas that
can help you.
Direct oral message topic assignment goals
You will have a number of days to choose a topic and prepare an
informative speech
The goals you need to aim for are these
1. speak for about 90 seconds to 2 minutes
2. engage the audience
3. have some organized evidence or examples
The organizational structure that you must use is direct. Remember,
this is a good news or
informative message. Your goal is to give your audience some
interesting and informative
information briefly and directly. The most important characteristic of
this direct or goodnews pattern is
1. announcing the topic / the purpose at the beginning of the speech
Do not leave the audience in suspense. Do not save the best for last.
Extemporaneous delivery
Practice the extemporaneous style. Think about what you want to say
beforehand. Think of
your main points and how you want to organize them. Think of what
you will say first and
what you will say to conclude at the end. But, when it come times to
speak, give yourself
freedom to choose words at that moment. In other words, know what
you want to say, but
not precisely how you are going to say it. This will give your
expression freedom and
naturalness.
Use of notes:
You may take a half-sheet of paper with you with some notes if you
need it. But, relying too
much on notes will cost you marks.
Reading a speech is not acceptable and will result in failure.
