Health Care Advocacy Assignment Rubric
Nurse patient advocacy includes speaking up while serving on committees or councils to solve problems and
ensure patients receive the best care possible. It also includes working with fellow nurses to approach leadership
and improve the environment for patients. Advocacy skills include problem solving, communicating, influencing
and collaborating.
A way nurses can become a better advocate is to continually gain more knowledge of current health and patient
care issues. It is important to consider becoming active in one or more professional nursing organizations and
participating in the local and national discussion regarding the future of health care. Nurses advocating for patients
can become involved with their professional organizations, volunteer to serve on a board, or in other ways
influence policy makers. It is all about using our voice to guide the decisions that will impact the future of patient
care, the profession of nursing and the healthcare industry as a whole.
The purpose of this assignment is to give you the opportunity to see firsthand how advocacy works by researching
a piece of legislation that will influence the discipline of nursing and/or the health of our society. Please compose a
letter of advocacy as outlined and address to the legislator you believe can best advance the passing of the bill.
Although you will submit this assignment to our Canvas course, the expectation is you will also mail the letter to
the person addressed. It should be approximately 2 pages (maximum).

NU 430 Apollo 13 Assignment Description
Your online graded assignment is to watch the film Apollo 13, often considered to be one of the most
important films illustrating the power of leadership ever made. While you watch the film, look for
examples and illustrations of the following 3 concepts within the 3 stages of Lewin?s theory of planned
change. The 3 major concepts are driving forces, restraining forces, and equilibrium. The 3 stages of
change are unfreezing, change, and refreezing. If you are unfamiliar with Lewin?s theory, it can be
found in the Yoder-Wise textbook and these websites provide a brief overview.
Lewin’s Change Theory
Change Management
It is often suggested that the film serves as a lesson on how to continue to evolve as a leader. The film
also illustrates how a leader may utilizes different strategies to influence others to change behavior.
?
This assignment is a formal paper (3-4 pages) using APA style. This means a cover sheet,
introduction, body of paper, and conclusion. No references are required. Please insert (copypaste) the grading rubric onto last page. The paper is not a question-short response format
assignment. You may consider the use of headings to clearly identify the parts of the paper.
Please refer to the grading rubric prior to beginning the assignment.
Assignment (When completed, upload to Canvas)
Using an essay format, and in APA style, address the following questions about the leadership lessons
illustrated in the film Apollo 13.
The film can be divided into 3 parts: unfreezing and mobilizing the group, lessons on how to change the
group and create movement, and lessons regarding freezing the change. Give a specific example of each
stage and the driving and restraining forces that you observed while watching the film. Be specific in
your examples and seek to show how these examples illustrate Lewin?s theory of change.
It is often suggested that the film serves as a lesson on how to continue to evolve as a leader. Describe 3
lessons you learned from the film that you will integrate into your leadership style going forward. Be
sure to clearly articulate the principle of the lesson and the BEHAVIOR that you will practice to
demonstrate this leadership attribute. During the film there are many illustrations of how leaders can
influence others to change behavior. Consider each of the following. Select 3 of the 5 and offer an
example of how it was illustrated in the film.
