For this assignment, you will create an annotated bibliography of children?s picture books based on a theme. These thematic bibliographies are useful to teachers trying to find a strong selection of books to use for various activities and can be useful for many years to come.

This assignment fulfills:

  • Module Outcome 3: You will have evaluated the quality of young children?s stories, poetry, and books.
  • Student Learning Outcome 2: You will have implemented appropriate language and literacy experiences using a broad repertoire of strategies to meet each child?s developmental needs.



Assignment:


Annotated Picture Book Bibliography

  1. Select a theme (examples include community helpers, holidays around the world, math, cooking).
  2. Develop a list of 10 children?s picture books that relate to your chosen theme.
  3. Create an annotated bibliography of the books you find:

    1. Include the author, title, illustrator, publisher, and publication date using APA documentation style.
    2. Describe the book?s contents.
    3. Review the contents of the book, including the purpose of the book, the moral of the story, or what is to be learned from the book.
  4. List the 10 books in alphabetical order by author’s last name.


Annotated Bibliography Example:



First, provide a bibliographical entry in APA format.

Brown, M.W. (2003).

The little island.

New York: Random House.



Then, write a brief description of the book and review its contents. This part should be about 3-5 sentences for each entry.

This story describes a little island in the middle of the wide ocean and a kitten who comes to visit. As the seasons change, the island and the native creatures witness changing arrays of sights, smells, and sounds?proving that, no matter how small, we are all an important part of the world.
