Marji isn’t like a normal child to a high extent. Marji is a child with an already profound knowledge of the world, at her age, and still wishes to find out more. When her father tells her that the stories they are told in school are wrong she doesn’t just say that her father is wrong, she sits and listens to his stories; “He did so! It’s written on the first page of our schoolbook.” “That’s what they say” (Satrapi 22). The scene also shows how their education system is being manipulated to show a story of their king being looked at like a god, because he was chosen by God, similar to the people of North Korea and their people believing the Il family to be their Gods. It’s a form of conditioning. While she listens to her father’s stories and believes them, she also keeps her own ideas and teaching in mind; “Maybe God helped them nevertheless” (Satrapi 24). She is also an empathetic child as she tries to imitate the imprisonment her grandfather went through by sitting in the bath for a lengthy period of time (Satrapi 25). However, she also admits that she is clueless about a lot of things, like at the beginning when she admits she didn’t, and the other kids, understand the meaning behind the veils and at the end when she doesn’t understand why they are laughing at the miseries of the world she goes and tries to learn; “I realized then that I didn’t understand anything. I read all the books I could.” (Satrapi 32).
