The topic of discussion is the fentanyl epidemic in the United States. Must have a thesis statement, three main body points (following a cause /effect/solution, or Monroe’s Motivate Sequence pattern)
To construct and present a speech that aims to change the audience?s views and prompts them to
think, feel, and/or act differently about an issue that is a socially significant problem or
controversy.
You must turn in a full sentence, formal outline on the day we begin to deliver speeches. Your
outline should not be a verbatim script of your speech, but it should include all your main ideas
and support for those ideas, a clear thesis statement, and a readily apparent and easy to follow
structure. All points and sub-points should be labeled and have a letter or number, no bullets. All
points and sub-points should be 1-2 sentences, no paragraphs, and no single words. You must also
include works cited list with at least 5 outside sources cited in MLA format. I expect these
outside sources to be highly credible and generally from academic and journalistic publications.
Any outline turned in without the required number of sources cited in MLA format will receive a
failing grade.
SPEECH MUST BE 6-8 minutes long
Strive for connection to the audience and conversational and interactive delivery. You will be
allowed to use notes. You may not use the entire script of your speech. Reading your speech will
result in a significant deduction in points.
