3000-3500 words. Final paper due April 20th

Overview

In the last few weeks, we examined the interventions of philanthrocapitalists into different aspects of contemporary life ? education, agriculture, and global health. You read articles and chapters that discussed the overarching philosophy of these interventions and explored some philanthrocapitalist projects and policies and their implications.

Prompt

For the final paper, you will pick one of these areas, or another area of your choosing, and investigate and analyze a particular case study to apply or test the theoretical framework of the class. Your case study should be a philanthrocapitalist project, policy, or program that you will analyze through the lens of the class. I offer some examples below, but you may focus on any issue that clearly intersects with the course theme.

Outline

Introduction

?Introduce Covid as pandemic

The declaration of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2)-related COVID-19 as a pandemic by the World Health Organization in March 2020 resulted in the imposition of various restrictions around the world, resulting in the “shutdown” of social and economic activities.

?Rich countries and how covid affected them
?Poor countries and what they need (Vaccines)
?Philanthropy is helping countries like Africa get over the pandemic (Thesis)

I intend to investigate is the impacts on covid-19 through philanthropy and would include equal access to vaccines. Gavi, the organization that works with low-income countries to immunize hundreds of millions of children, was one of Bill and Melinda’s first major philanthropic acts. A portion of the $250 million pledged today will be used to fund a similar delivery operation for COVID-19 drugs and vaccines. Rich countries are “moving on” from COVID, as they have with other diseases such as malaria and HIV, while impoverished countries continue to be destroyed.

There’s still a lot we don’t know about COVID-19, but one thing is certain: the disease’s impact on Africa will be unlike anything we’ve seen before. For example, the continent’s health systems are less developed than those of other continents. Despite high levels of disease transmission, emerging data from Africa shows a remarkably low number of reported COVID-19 deaths, with the pandemic’s projected trend unknown. However, the pandemic’s long-term effects on health and development are likely to be significant, not just for African countries but for the entire world.
