Review Sheet for Midterm Examination?HIEU 102
Instructions:
This is a take home exam. The exam will be opened on Canvas at midnight on February
3. Your answers must be submitted by 11:59 PM on February 3 via Canvas. You are free
to look back at the texts, your notes, and the lectures. However, the same rules as always
surrounding plagiarism still apply. All your answers need to be in your own words
(except where you are quoting the text). You cannot copy each other or outside sources,
and it will be an academic integrity violation if you do so.
Short Answer: The short answer questions will be based upon quotations or images we
have discussed in lectures. All of the slides that have been displayed in class are available
on Canvas. Review these and be prepared to explain the significance of the quotations we
have discussed. Questions about 7 such quotations will appear on the examination and
you will have to choose 5 to answer. Each question is worth 10%. You should be able to
answer each question in approximately 2-3 sentences and not more than 125 words per
question.
Essay: You will be allowed to prepare for the following essay question in advance. In
this essay, it is expected that you will be able to refer to relevant ancient authors (e.g.
Polybius says the following about the Roman constitution). You may also wish to refer
to some of the slides that have been shown in class. The essay should be no more than 3
double-spaced pages in 12 point font.
One of the defining characteristics of the Roman state is its willingness to incorporate
non-Romans into its citizen body while maintaining a political structure that gave all
Romans a voice in who leads the state. Rome was never a state that gave all citizens an
equal voice in choosing leaders or making decisions, but it always tried to ensure that
these citizens participated politically to some degree. For this essay, answer the following
question:
How did the nature of political decision making and the manner of political
participation change for Romans during the period between Servius Tullius?s sixth
century seizure of power and the conclusion of the end of the Conflict of the Orders in
287 BC?
In your answer you should consider how 1) the coup of Servius Tullius 2) the
creation of the Republic and 3) the Conflict of the Orders changed who chose the leaders
of the Roman state and altered the balance of power between patricians and plebeians.
NB? Although this essay asks for your opinion, your answer must be supported by
ancient evidence. Because it has been prepared in advance, your answer should contain
specific details (names of significant figures, dates of events, etc) and references to
ancient source materials.
