INSTRUCTIONS
In your progress report, you will update your professor on the status of your project and provide an outline for your final report. The progress report will allow you to reflect on the research process and organize your research findings. It will also give your professor information that will enable him/her to provide meaningful feedback.
Content of the progress report
Introduction
State the purpose of the memo with reference to your project. Remind the reader (your professor) what topic you’ve chosen.
Progress Summary
Summarize the progress that has been accomplished, clarify what still needs to be done, and briefly discuss any issues you’ve encountered.
Answer the following types of questions:
?Have you completed all of the research?
?What do you need to investigate further?
?What report sections have you completed so far?
?What sections still remain to be done?
?What obstacles have you faced with writing the report?
?etc.
Outline
Provide a formal outline for your technical research report (not the progress report). Group the information/research into clear sections and sub-sections:
Introduction-4 sentences-You can refer to the problem, background and scope of the issue.
Discussion-4 sentences-Data analysis of what you found thus far that has been integral.
Conclusion/Recommendation-4 sentences-A summary of what you have found to recommend as a solution
Summary and Future Plans
Conclude by summarizing how the project is going. Also describe how you intend to address any obstacles and tackle the remaining work. Finally, let the reader (your professor) know if there’s anything you require from her to successfully complete the report.
Your research proposal should be 1.5 – 2 pages in length (single spaced) and should be submitted as a Word document.
