Legislative Research Paper
The grading rubric for this assignment is posted on Moodle. You will research one of the current
legislative bills being proposed at the city, county, state or federal level. This will enable you to
understand the process of legislative research and will equip you to become an effective policy
practitioner.
You are expected to write a 10-page APA research paper, and include the following
components:
1. The official title of the legislation.
2. The history of the bill and a summary of recent action.
3. The social, economic, cultural and spiritual environment in which the legislative bill
is being introduced.
4. The names of the legislators who sponsored the bill and what are their vested
interest in the bill
5. The involvement of interest and/or advocacy groups from both sides of a particular
issue.
6. A summary of the key points and intentions, benefits, service provisions, and
funding
7. The name of your representatives that are (or will be) involved with the proposed
legislation.
8. The political history of your representatives. This includes political leanings, voting
record, interests.
9. The positions of your representatives on this issue.
10. What unique interest might your representatives have in this piece of legislation?
