The nurse interviewed was Amanda Kalu, an RN supervisor, and wound director at
Clinton Healthcare Facility, Clinton, Maryland. I chose to interview the nurse because she leads
one of the busiest departments in the hospital, covering those with the various forms of wounds
in the facility. The department has been able to deliver under such a situation. This is widely
attributed to her leadership style, collaboration, and cooperation within the team.
The objective of the interview was to establish how the RN leader has enhanced
collaboration and cooperation in the wounds section at the hospital to ensure they offer quality
patient care and management of wounds and faster sharing of information about the patients that
would facilitate faster recovery.
Amanda Kalu employs a democratic leadership style that actively allows the junior
employees to participate in patient care and decision-making. Although the senior nurses make
some critical decisions, she has enabled the junior nurses to play an active role in patient care
decision-making whenever they feel they can competently make such calls.
Amanda claims the style has allowed for active participation of all nurses in patient care
and collaboration, allowing all nurses to learn from one another. The style has also enabled a
faster learning process for the junior nurses and improved their confidence to handle wounds,
including those that may seem challenging. However, the style sometimes confuses the patients
as they may not get what position or qualification a specific nurse may hold, thus barring
communication.
The nurse admitted to occasionally making communication errors, especially when there
is an inaccurate recording of patient information by the junior nurses. One of the communication

errors she had made was prescribing a sugar diet to a diabetic patient. In response to this,
Amanda introduced a policy to list every patient’s dietary restrictions, allergens, and medical
contraindications pinned at every patient’s bedside.
Amanda uses dialogue to resolve conflicts that may arise within her department. She
always brings the two parties to dialogue and settles the dispute. She says her method has
ensured that most conflicts are settled and domiciled within the department before developing
into massive disputes.
Amanda says that she uses her family to enable her to recover from the stresses sustained
at work. Her partner and children understand the nature of her work and offer her comfort
whenever she requires one. She also advices for taking a short break whenever one feels work
stress to allow one to be in the appropriate emotional position to handle patients.
Amanda encourages the junior nurses to work hand in hand with the senior nurses to
allow teamwork in her leadership style. Also, she has created sessions of sharing some
challenging or unfamiliar cases handled by a nurse with the nursing team in the department and
open sharing of knowledge in a collaborative process.
The Covid situation has affected the collaborative sessions that she used to hold, given
there are calls to exercise social distancing and minimize person-to-person contact. This lead to
her relying on social media to conduct such sessions. The pandemic has also boosted her team’s
creativity to develop innovative ways of caring for patients with minimal physical contact.
The communication skills I used in the interview were non-verbal communication like
gestures and eye contact. I also observed effective turn-taking and only interrupted when
necessary I also actively listened to the interviewee and nodded to show consent (Ali, 2020).
