This Assignment is about making a substantive comments to (2) of my classmates posts based on the movie titled “Three face of Eve”. Their post are below.

(1)What struck me most in this film was the emergence of the new personality, which, in Jungian psychology, could be called the reveal of Eve?s shadow side. In Freudian psychology, one could relate the personality of Eve White to the Super-Ego, the personality of Eve Black to the ID, and lastly, the emergence of the third personality?Jane?would be the Ego, as Jane attempts to balance the two personalities together.

(2) Eve began to experience difficulty in her life due to the emergence of her shadow personality, Eve Black. The change in Eve?s mental state soon began to cause blackouts and amnesia. Further, the deficit within her mental state led to impulsive buying, excessive drinking, and the abuse of her child?all of which she could not account for her within her own memory. (3) The psychiatrist Doctor Curtis Luther ?played by Lee J. Cobb?uses the Freudian approach of psychoanalysis by digging into Eve?s childhood to discover the root of her repressed trauma. In Dr. Luther?s analysis of Eve related to her memory gaps, Dr. Luther determines Eve is to be diagnosed as having Multiple Personality Disorder, or Dissociative Identity Disorder as it is now known today.

(4) In the early days of Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), the original term for such a mental state was referred to as ?double consciousness,? in that this state of consciousness deals with deficits in sleeping. The idea was further developed by multiple psychologists throughout the years; however, it was Dr. Jean-Martin Charcot (1887)? a French neurologist?who laid the foundation for DID. In the 20th century, Freud was one psychologist who stood on the shoulders of Charcot to aid in creating his theories on dissociation and childhood trauma (repression). (5) What was repressed in Eve?s unconscious causing her disorder was the childhood trauma of having to kiss her dead grandmother goodbye?which was forced upon her by her mother. As a child, Eve was still wary of the concept of death, not fully able to understand it or grasp the ability of what death truly is. This resulted in Eve repressing the memory of kissing her dead grandmother; thus, resulting in her disorder.

1. While watching this movie many things struck out to me as interesting or intriguing to say the least. This type of disorder is not one that many people come across every day and deal with. Seeing it in a movie form really put things into perspective for me. I was really moved by the movie and did more research on this type of disorder and actually found out that Eve ended up having 22 different personalities in total instead of 3 which is what the movie depicted. “In 1977, she announced herself to the world with her memoir, ?I’m Eve,? which she saw as a corrective to the hit film. To start with, she had 22 distinct personalities, not three.” this really puts things more into perspective for me by showing me how more sever this type of disorder can be at times. 22 different types of personalities is not something that I can totally wrap my head around. That number really blows my mind and I found it really interesting that the movie didn’t exactly show 22 personalities.

2. Eve was suffering from hidden PTSD symptoms as a result of a terrible event she had experienced as a child. Her PTSD caused her to forget events and experience auditory hallucinations, forcing her to do things she wouldn’t normally do. Research on adverse childhood experiences in humans showed that as the number of adverse childhood experiences increases, the stress response will be drastic and thus the increased risk of suicide later in life. which is also another reason why she faced many more problems later in her life.

3. She was initially diagnosed with amnesia by a doctor after forgetting events which include blanking out, having moments of confusion, and emotional stress, but she was then diagnosed with multiple personality disorder/ split personality disorder/ dissociative identity disorder.

4. 1)As a psychoanalyst, Sigmund Freud opposed the concept of multiple personality disorder.

2)Suicidal people with DID are often unaware that something has gone wrong with their personality.

5. Eve was forced to do a goodbye kiss to her dead grandmother which started affecting her life after losing her second child.
