Answer the unaswered questions in the document attatched below. Questions are based of the book Testosterone Rex by Cordelia Fine1.What is the Testosterone Rex view?
a.Testosterone Rex can be described as the social idea in which testosterone affects the cognitive abilities and behavior of men, therefore making them better at things such as competitions, aggression, strength, etc. The Testosterone Rex view implies that inequality of the sexes is natural, not cultural. Testosterone is a hormone that makes men tall, deep-voiced, hairy, aids in developing muscle mass, etc. In todays society we tend to associate these qualities with masculine
characteristics such as sex drive/skills, stength, assertiveness, leadership, amongst many others. However, Cordelia Fine makes it a point throughout the book to prove the reasons that this view is a false narrative rather than factual. Cordelia
explains that the testosterone rex view reinforces unequal status quos and it is time to leave this myth in the past.
2.What was the hypothesis Angus Bateman was testing?
a.In the 1940s, biologist Angus Bateman conducted a series of experiments on fruit flies that appeared to show conclusively that competition between males for
fertile female vessels was the driving force of evolution. Bateman examined ideas on sexual selection and male-female differences in sexual behavior. He believed the male strategy was to be as promiscuous as possible so that they could maximize their success. While the female did not gain anything by being promiscuous and accordinging to Bateman, the female did not benefit from multiple partners and should choose wisely. The hypothesis that Angus Bateman was testing was coined the Bateman Paradigm. He believed that females benefited less from promiscuity and that males benefited more. He proposed that women
should practice quality not quantity and men should practice quantity over quality.
3.Describe at least one of the problems in Batemans study
a.One of the biggest problems with Batemans study is that he believed that males can produce unlimited numbers of small sperm, while females produce only a
limited number of large eggs. In order to maximize reproductive success, females should be selective and picky with whom they engage with, while men should be exploring their options vigorously with as many people as they please.
However, contradictory to the study, females do in fact equally and actively seek and benefit from multiple sexual partners just as males do. It has actually been proven since that both females and males can benefit more from multiple sexual partners when trying to get pregnant or impregenate a woman.
4.Their is a quote by psychologist David Schmitt giving a reason why evolution favors sexual divirsity in males, but not in females. In relation to this, he claims that men can produce 100 offspring by indiscriminately mating with 100 women in a given year. What does Fine respond to Schmitt?
a.When Dchmitt makes the claim that men can produce 100 offspring by indiscriminately mating with 100 women in a given year it is completely absurd.
