Clients Rights Video Case Study
In this video case study, the patient is telling the nurse that she is in pain and wants to
stop her chemotherapy. The daughter then asks to speak to the nurse outside and said: ?My mom
doesn?t know what she is saying and we have to do everything to save her and she has to have
the chemotherapy?. This case study was about the client?s rights and how the family’s wishes
can sometimes contradict what the patient wants and how the client?s rights play into that. As the
nurse for this patient I would tell the daughter, ?I cannot imagine what a hard time it is for you
and your family. I see you are upset about your mom’s wishes to stop chemotherapy and want her
to continue the chemotherapy. Have you talked about how you are feeling with your mother?
Have you and your mother talked about all the treatment options with the doctor? If not, I can get
a consult with the doctor so you and your mother know all resources and treatment options
available, and once that has been done you guys can make an educated decision. However, this
may not change your mother’s mind, and once the decision has been made you should respect
your mother’s wishes as she has the right to refuse treatment. We cannot force her to take
medication if she does not want to. It is important to talk about how you are feeling and keep
open communication with your mother and to try to see her perspective as well. This will help
create the best form of communication and support for both of you especially in this trying time
no matter the outcome of the discussion?. I started my response the way I did by acknowledging
the client?s feelings. It is important to do this to have therapeutic communication with the client
and family to created patient-centered care. By opening this way, I am not dismissing the
daughter?s feelings. I am also summarizing what the daughter said to make sure I heard and
understood what she has said and not misunderstanding what was being communicated. Next, I
recommended that the daughter opens up communication with her mother. Hence making it so

that her mother understands how she is feeling about her illness. This creates an open dialogue
for the mother to also express her feelings about her life to helping the daughter see her
perspective.
The patients? rights are extremely important for the nurse to understand and explain to the
patient and their family. The patient’s bill of rights explains that patients have the right: ?to be
treated justly, to receive information about her care, to refuse treatment, to have confidential
medical care, to have continuity of care, to have pain treated to a level of toleration, to be free
from physical restraints (unless the patient is thought to be likely to hurt himself or others), to
view their medical records, to have explanations about bills, and to be provided advanced
directives? (Olejarczyk, 2020). I asked the daughter next if she and her mother have talked to the
doctor about all her treatment options because it is her mother?s right to receive all information
about her care, have explanations, and be provided advance directives. I can help the daughter
with her feelings by making sure her mother is fully informed since it is her right and it could
give her mother another option for treatment. This may lead her mother to decide on another
treatment plan rather than stopping all treatment. Furthermore, the mother may not know what
stopping chemotherapy means which is why it is important to go over the risk of stopping with
the doctor. Lastly, I informed the daughter that it is her mother’s legal right to refuse treatment
and we cannot force her to continue the chemotherapy. I told the daughter this because she may
not know what her mother’s legal rights are as the patient. I also informed the daughter that the
consultation might not change her mom’s mind because I did not want to give her false hope. I
encouraged the daughter to open communication with her mother again so she can have the best
relationship with her in the final months of her life. The nurse must respect the patient’s right to
refuse treatment even when the family does want her to have treatment. This holds the code of

ethics of nursing the nurse took when she graduated. This keeps the same protections for the
patient as the daughter would want for herself if she was in her mother?s situation. Again, this is
why I encourage communication between them so the daughter can see her mother?s point of
view. Clients’ rights can be hard to uphold for certain family members and the nurse in tricky
situations.
