For week #3 forum I have decided to choose option 3. I also decided to look at The Declaration of Independence for my key passage to analyze and transcribe.
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”. The opening passage to The Declaration of Independence is the perfect embodiment of the meaning of both freedom and independence. After the declaration of equality among all men, Thomas Jefferson also declares that all power is bestowed from the Creator along with the “unalienable” rights of “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”. This is also referred to as “the American Dream”. What more is there really to desire in life than to freely live in a place where we have the liberty to live happily? A new nation was just birthed as America split from Great Britain and now declared our Independence. This is the context of history but I also believe that the meaning is much more than that. I believe that these words should act as a reminder to all from that day forward that we are to live in this manner in our everyday lives. And we also know that these freedoms that are our God given right, were not really free at all. There was a price that they all had to pay for branching off from their home and starting a fresh. Also that many died in the fight to establish and maintain this freedom, even to this day. Jefferson was a spokesman for his people and his attitude reflected that. The significance of the passage is it truly sums up the whole body of work in a single sentence. It is everyone’s dream to live a life of liberty and happiness with the ones we love, and so this passage still holds truth to this day in my opinion.
